Though Friday, Nov. 21, seemed like any other night at the Clayroom, with paints, pots and jazz music, a portion of every purchase made went towards Steps for Kids Club’s mission to support children in need.
Steps for Kids is a nonprofit club that raises money for the Boston Children’s Hospital and Horizon’s Shelter, an organization dedicated to providing quality childcare to homeless families. The club hosts events such as their Clayroom Fundraiser, where 10 percent of sales from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. are donated to their chosen organizations.
Steps for Kids president and sophomore Adina Busler said her connection to the Clayroom and its previous work with another club made the event a promising idea.
“I chose the Clayroom because I used to work here two years ago, and I thought it was a nice environment,” Busler said. “I saw another club that did this a while ago, so I knew they [the Clayroom] might be up for this, and that’s why I contacted them.“
Vice-president and treasurer, sophomore Elena Li, said the club members thought the Clayroom Fundraiser would be successful because of the relaxing environment where people can paint and chat.
Li said she hoped attendees would enjoy their time while contributing to their goal. She said she believed people would be inspired to continue supporting and thinking about their cause to help kids beyond this fundraiser.
“I hope that they have a fun time painting with friends and know that they are actively donating to a good cause,” Li said. “I hope they join the club and when we do more fundraisers, they come and support.”
According to participant and sophomore Silvia Donovan, the event allowed students to sponsor the cause and spend time with friends in a creative way.
“My friends were telling me about how it’s going to be a fun opportunity to hang out and support a great cause,” Donovan said. “So I thought it would be great to hang out and do something creative.”
Donovan said she loved the choice of the Clayroom as a venue for the fundraiser, having gone to it when she was younger; she used the time to work on Christmas gifts for her family.
For future events, Busler said she would like to involve more people from different grades and schools, but she also enjoyed seeing many familiar faces at the fundraiser. The money raised from the Clayroom will go towards improving and providing affordable services to children and their families.
“We’re hoping that it’ll help advance their care for kids and make some progress in their medicine and providing for kids that are sick,” Busler said. “It’s also going to Horizon’s Shelter, where they help homeless families or families that need help with education for their little kids.”
