Welcome to the first installment of The Cypress’s 2025-26 fashion column, “Styled by Suyon!” I will provide personal style recommendations and explore current trends in the fashion industry. Please enjoy November’s recommendations, and I’ll see you next time!
Fall in New England means chilly weather and autumnal colors in the trees and on the ground, and fashion is changing accordingly. I’ve compiled a list of fashion recommendations to ensure that this year, you can stay cozy and cute. These pieces rarely get the spotlight they deserve, especially at the high school, so I’m hoping this list brings you some inspiration for how to expand your style, no matter what it is. Have fun styling!
Turtlenecks
A cute and practical top, the turtleneck keeps your neck warm while radiating chicness. Opt for an oversized, chunky, knit turtleneck sweater or a regular turtleneck top that’s long and ruffled (and able to be worn under a sweater, vest or dress). Whether it’s autumnal neutrals or bright hues, you can’t go wrong. Style with baggy or bootcut jeans, flared leggings, white linen pants or my next recommendation…
Corduroy pants
Love your jeans, but looking to spice things up? Corduroy pants might be just the thing you’re searching for. These pants are thick enough to provide warmth during our particularly cold winters, and they also match the vibe of some of the coziest characters: Rory Gilmore, Charlie Brown and, of course, Corduroy! Choose a pair of brown, maroon, burgundy or (if you want to brighten things up in the dead of winter) white corduroy pants. Pair with a sweater, cardigan or boatneck three-quarter sleeve top.
Midi skirts
While miniskirts have pretty much always been in fashion, and maxi skirts have recently risen in popularity, midi skirts have been sitting in the shadows, underrated. These skirts are long enough to keep you warm with some thermal tights, and they’re just as—if not more—charming than the other two options. Rock a linen or cotton skirt (flowy ones will probably be best for trekking the snowy, salty streets) and don’t be afraid to stray away from white! Go for a warm-toned plum or maroon color. Style with a chunky knit sweater or fitted cardigan and Birkenstock Bostons, Mary Janes or sporty sneakers.
Patterned tights
Sheer black tights are a classic, but why don’t we try something fun? Pick a pattern to try out this season: lace floral, pointelle or polka dots. Why not switch up the color, too? Chocolate brown, navy blue, maroon, plum: the options are endless. Patterned tights are perfect if you want to add a statement piece to your outfit or bring some color into a dreary winter day. If it’s too cold, try layering the tights over a pair of regular thermal tights. Pair with a mini or midi skirt or leg warmers. For shoes, try ballet flats or practically any kind of boot (combat, chelsea, knee-high).
Duffle coats
Want to embody Paddington? Tired of your puffer jacket? Looking for something similar to a trench coat? Or just looking for something to keep you warm on your 20-degree walk to school? Duffle coats are calling your name. Keep it chic and casual by opting for a short (but not cropped) one. Beige, brown, gray or navy are perfect basics to match with anything. If you’re looking for a statement piece, try warm shades of red or purple. These coats are versatile and can be worn with pretty much any outfit you choose!
Knit fingerless gloves
Accessories are essential for staying warm in Brookline. Lovely and not finger-constricting, knit fingerless gloves add charm and comfort to your wardrobe, while allowing you full hand mobility. My pair has a vine of maroon flowers knit into it, but any design will do! Go for autumnal icons, like acorns or pumpkins, or more general images like stars or animals. Pair with a comfy scarf and newsboy hat. And, if you’re looking for a fun and very winter-coded DIY project this season, try knitting your own pair!
