Welcome back to The Cypress’s fashion column “Styled by Suyon!” Here, I provide personal style recommendations and explore current trends in the fashion industry. Please enjoy May’s recommendations, and I’ll see you next time!
The days are growing longer, the sunshine warmer and the birds louder. Summer is finally calling! The reopening of the Copley Square Farmers Market marks two things: the need for a cute farmers market outfit, and the beginning of Brookline’s warmest season. Both call for some wardrobe changes, so I’m here to offer some suggestions!
Drop waist dresses
If 2026 is the new 2016, then maybe that means the 2020s are the new Roaring Twenties. First popularized by brands like Chanel during the flapper era, the drop waist dress symbolizes comfort and freedom from traditional fashion trends. Still, it is effortlessly elegant. Known for its loose silhouette, the dress style is light and easy for warm summer days. Go with a white linen or cotton spaghetti strap dress (paired with a pop of color from your favorite Mary Janes) for casual park strolls. For special occasions, opt for a fun colored dress with sequins or rhinestones if you feel like embodying one of Gertrude Stein’s party guests.
Fabric belts
Who says you can’t wear a bandana as a belt? Add some color to your closet by repurposing a scarf and tying it around your jeans and skirts! Any scarf adds charm—paisley, floral or just a solid color. And, if you’re looking for a fun craft to do over summer break, you only need a piece of fabric, like cotton or velvet, to create your own belt. Customize by embroidering symbols or adding strings to tie it up intricately.
Sheer, lacy tank tops
Whether the whole top is sheer or just its neckline, this style adds some whimsy to your outfit, and it is also a great excuse to layer creatively. Whether it’s a bright, patterned or lacy underlayer, you’re all set for a day spent at the beach or by the lake—or really wherever! Accessorize with armlets and necklaces to show off the shirt design. Or consider my next recommendation…
Dangly earrings
Dainty flowers? Hanging pearls? A charm of the sun, perhaps? While hoop earrings have been popular in the past few years, dangly earrings are precious and timeless accessories. Choose from endless possibilities of shapes, charms and colors. And don’t shy away from elaborate, swoopy designs! I personally recommend delicate ones to keep things light and fresh during the hotter months.
My Color of the Summer prediction:
Summer means color, so I’m very excited to share my pick for this year! My spring prediction was purple, but this season we’re moving all the way to the opposite side of the color wheel with orange! Specifically, a bright sunset orange. Vibrant and warm but vastly unpopular, orange is due for a deserved comeback. You can stand out by wearing it not only on your tops and bottoms, but also on your shoes, nails and even makeup. Complement the color with cherry blossom pink, and you’ll perfectly embody a fruit salad—one of the many joys of the upcoming season.
