Welcome back to The Cypress’s fashion column “Styled by Suyon!” Here, I provide personal style recommendations and explore current trends in the fashion industry. Please enjoy March’s recommendations, and I’ll see you next time!
March marks the beginning of a slightly awkward transition period in fashion, when we aren’t quite sure if we should stick to cozy winter styles or shift to bright spring outfits. While the sunlight and the sound of birds chirping give us hope, the ever-changing weather keeps us guessing. To navigate this confusing time, I’ve found some stylish pieces to keep us cozy as winter stubbornly clings on, while also adding much-needed freshness to our wardrobes. Whatever your style, I hope this gives you some inspiration!
Capri pants
Chic and fun, capris are a simple way to upscale any outfit, while still keeping things casual. While they’re probably my hottest take yet, don’t be afraid to expand your style past the conventional school one. Try baggy white linen ones, low-rise denim ones, or if you’re looking for something more sporty, navy blue leggings. Pair with colorful ballet flats or chunky sneakers, plus some fun socks or leg warmers.
Boatneck three-quarter sleeve tops
Tired of your jewelry always hiding under your long sleeve shirts? A boatneck is the perfect solution: an effortlessly, elegant neckline that ensures a put-together look and also some variety from the typical crewneck. Opt for a fitted one or a baggy waffle-knit sweater. Experiment with stripes, florals, polka dots or maybe even embroider your own design (two small pockets with colorful buttons might be your thing).
Decorative scarfs
March weather in Brookline isn’t the most reliable, so layering is a must. But accessorizing is only another opportunity to add a statement piece or add more character to your outfit! Instead of the usual knit scarves we would see in autumn and winter, try out a linen, cotton or silk one to keep it light in the spring. They can be worn on colder days with a sweater, but also on warmer ones with a tank top or simple dress. Scarves are a perfect way to add vibrancy to your outfit, so try out different patterns or some springtime colors; pastel pink, light green or baby blue!
Vests
A fuzzy one or a puffer one? Neutral colors or a soft pink or purple? Take your pick! Just as cozy and layerable as the decorative scarf, vests can easily be styled with an oversized t-shirt or loose sweater, baggy jeans and boots or Birkenstock Bostons. Vests are also a great way to stay warm during the chilly walks to school, but they are compact enough to shove into your backpack when the sun comes out.
Mary Jane shoes
Simple and charming, Mary Janes will not fail to bring a little cheer to your day. Pair them with lettuce socks and bootcut jeans or a flowy midi skirt (these are not only great for autumn, but spring too). Whether you choose a velvet pair in your signature color or a classic leather pair, or opt for flats or small heels, walking in these shoes is sure to make you feel like you’re going to a bookstore or a flower shop, the perfect sunny-day activities.
Spring of 2026 color prediction:
Butter yellow took center stage last spring. This spring, I think a new color deserves some love: lilac. Soft and warm with a slightly rosy undertone, lilac, like most purples, is an underdog. For styling, complement the color with dark greens, yellows and oranges. Incorporate it into your outfits through not only your tops and bottoms, but also accessories. Look for lilac jewelry, hairpins, headbands, belts, nail polish and even scarves or Mary Janes! The color is not only calming, but also perfectly captures the coming spring.
