A cornerstone of Chestnut Hill for the past 42 years, White Mountain Creamery was the place where everybody went to buy ice cream. Breakups, overheating and boredom were all remedied in this magical place. Now, it is gone.
This past year, the creamery passed ownership over to New City Microcreamery. The store has taken on the popular location of 19 Commonwealth Ave. in Chestnut Hill, and looks no different. But the question remains, does its ice cream live up to that of its predecessor?
The store’s rustic vibe is still intact. A massive variety of flavors, from apple crisp to vanilla, is displayed on TV screens behind the counter; more modern for sure, but not too different. More surprisingly, the prices are still reasonable: $5.75 for the first scoop, $3 for each additional scoop, and waffle cones for $2.
From this diverse selection, I chose three flavors: the complex tiramisu, childish chocolate hazelnut crunch, and classic vanilla.
Vanilla Ice Cream (7.5/10):
The ice cream is nice, smooth and quite creamy, thanks to its liquid nitrogen base. It tastes different from its predecessor, not as rich and sweet, but good nonetheless. The flavor is also well-balanced, neither too harsh nor too sugary. It’s a solid 7.5/10, good for what it is.
Tiramisu Ice Cream (4/10):
The tiramisu, however, does not live up to expectations. The coffee ice cream is icy, and the mascarpone-flavored base is bland. Moreover, it’s missing the best part of tiramisu, the ladyfingers, which further drops its rating to a 4/10.
Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch (9.5/10):
Thankfully, the chocolate hazelnut crunch offsets the disappointing tiramisu. This flavor is an absolute hit. Nutty hazelnut mixed with chocolate is, unsurprisingly, a fantastic flavor combo, and the New City Microcreamery does it right in a way reminiscent of the old creamery. No part overpowers the other, and the icy texture that plagued the tiramisu is gone. No flavor is perfect, however, and this one lacks one of the key features marked in its name, the crunch. Still, at 9.5/10, it’s a must-try.
Overall, the Microcreamery is a great ice cream spot on any day, and it is a suitable replacement for White Mountain. If you need a reasonably priced scoop of ice cream, I would definitely recommend some chocolate hazelnut crunch from the New City Microcreamery. You won’t be disappointed.
