The girls varsity soccer team fought hard for a 1-0 win against Acton-Boxborough Revolutions on Friday, Oct. 3rd, at Skyline Park. Dedicated to breast cancer awareness, the game was part of a team partnership with the Ellie Fund, an organization that assists patients with breast cancer, to raise money and awareness.
The game was organized by senior Eva Berkson, junior Liv Klawiter and junior Jaime Magee. Magee said she enjoyed the experience and was glad to see a game dedicated to the cause.
“I think it’s just a good environment,” Magee said. “It’s something fun to do that is also for a good cause.”
Advertising for the Ellie Fund was at the entrance of Skyline Park. In total, volunteers raised around $800 worth of donations.
To support the cause, the Warriors sported pink socks, spectators showed up in pink spirit and a younger Brookline girls soccer team wore their pink jerseys.
Shortly after the first whistle blew, junior Haley Ament was charged by the Revolution goalie, resulting in a yellow card and a free kick for the Warriors.
Junior Juliana Segal took the free kick, which ricocheted off the goalie. However, senior Priscila Hill banged it in off the rebound, resulting in the Warriors scoring the first goal of the game.
Hill credited her goal to Segal’s free kick and the opportunity it gave her.
“I think it was mostly Juliana Segal. She did an amazing free kick, so congrats to her,” Hill said.
The Warriors stayed strong for the rest of the half, unable to score but playing strong defense. Hill said the Warriors played strongly with great energy, trying to be first to every ball.
After halftime, the back and forth between the Warriors and Revolution continued, with neither team able to score. However, senior and captain Mirabelle Kesselman was tripped by a Revolution player and was given a free kick from the midfield, although it proved unsuccessful.
The Warriors finished out the game 1-0 after an uneventful second half, adding another win to their record.
Head coach Ben Peters said he was proud of the Warriors’ performance and, looking ahead, he hopes the Warriors keep climbing in the power rankings.
“Hopefully, some more big wins,” Peters said, “We got to move back up in the power rankings a little bit, so hopefully we can get some more goals and get some more wins on the board.”
