The boys varsity volleyball team defeated the Woburn Tanners 3-0, in the Schlunz Gymnasium on Friday, May 29. With this win, the Warriors will advance to the round of 16 of the MIAA state tournament.
From the opening set, the Warriors showed high energy. Senior outside hitter and captain Amir Tomer played a major role in the early momentum with powerful spikes and solid serves. The Warriors won the first set 25-13.
According to Tomer, the Warriors were focused on making smart decisions throughout the match, which helped them maintain control of the game.
“I think that we made good adjustments, we stayed calm and controlled, ” Tomer said. “We realized that if we just get the ball on their side of the net, they’re going to struggle.”
The Warriors continued to dominate throughout the second set, winning 25-8. As the team extended its lead, senior middle Zachary Spencer said their ability to remain engaged and support one another throughout the game was a key to their success.
“I think keeping the ball in play, staying focused, and keeping our energy high on the court and off the court really helped us, Spencer said.
Despite taking control of the match early, the Warriors were faced with a tough challenge in the third set. The Tanners started off strong, and the Warriors’ receiving and communication began to break down. As a result, according to Tomer, there were still areas where the team could improve despite the strong performance.
“It could have been a little bit better in moments; it all comes down to just playing our best, ” Tomer said.
Despite the initial struggle, the Warriors eventually won the third set 25-18, securing the sweep to advance themselves to the Round of 16.
According to head coach Lexi De La Cruz, the team’s main focus for the next game is to clean up small mistakes and play more consistently.
“We are really good, but we lose three or four points due to [small] errors,” De La Cruz said. “Recognizing that not every single time that our players touch the ball we will get the point, so making those rallies longer and getting better opportunities to score is [important].”
