The girls varsity lacrosse team fought hard, but lost 14-5 to the Wellesley Raiders on Tuesday, May 12, at Downes Field.
Assistant coach Annie Carlson said that despite the loss, the team showed great collaboration with each other and worked well as a team.
“The girls just really stepped up, and I’m really proud of how they played all the way through all four quarters,” Carlson said. “They played for each other, and we had our game plan, and they played really, really hard, and I’m really proud of them.”
The Warriors started strong in the first quarter, with the first goal of the game scored by junior Serena Yankowitz. However, the Warriors’ 2-0 lead was quickly crushed by the Raiders’ swiftly built momentum.
Throughout the second quarter, the Raiders gained momentum and scored a series of goals, ending the half up 10-2.
Out of the break, the Raiders continued to score, with the Warriors struggling to keep up, ending the quarter with the Warriors down 13-2.
Despite their defeat in the second and third quarters, the Warriors managed to recover in the fourth quarter, scoring early on. As the quarter progressed, junior and captain Lily Kleinbaum scored the last two goals of the game, bringing the final score to 5-14.
Senior and captain Sylvie Kostant-Greeley said the team kept its morale high consistently throughout the game.
“I think we were really focused on staying positive and keeping up the intensity,” Kostant-Greeley said. “No matter the score, it’s [about] just not letting up and going into each quarter with a fresh mindset.”
Similarly, senior and captain Elin Lindgren-Palm said she thought the Warriors did a great job during the second half of the game, and that their teamwork contributed to their ability to improve in the fourth quarter.
“I feel like the more game experience we had, the more we gelled as a team,” Lindgren-Palm said. “I’m very proud of our fourth quarter, and I think we did very well.”
Kostant-Greeley said the team was able to keep up their strength throughout the entire game and work together well, showing improvement from their last game against the Raiders.
“Playing against this team, we had a lot of growth since the last game, and that’s really obvious in people’s attitudes,” Kostant-Greeley said. “To have a good comeback in the fourth quarter is always good.”
