The girls varsity hockey team beat the Framingham Flyers 7-2 on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Walter Brown Arena.
The game was also the team’s annual cancer awareness game, and the Warriors sported unique purple jerseys to celebrate the cause, while raising over $1,600 for the American Cancer Society.
Junior and captain Jordan Gifford said the energy in the locker room was different, knowing they were playing for a cause.
“Cancer is something that affects so many people who are so close to us. Playing with them in mind and using that to motivate us gives us more energy, especially with a really late game after a long week of late practice,” Gifford said.
The energy during the game was contagious. Freshman Juliet Platt scored one goal in the first period, but not long after, the Flyers scored two consecutive goals to end the period 1-2.
Head coach Sarah Schwenzfeier said she thought the first quarter was a little rough, but the team was able to make a strong comeback.
“The team rallied behind each other for the cause of the day, and they came out in the second period,” Schwenzfeier said.
In the second period, the Warriors tied it up early on, with Platt scoring a goal right at the beginning. A couple of minutes later, she scored again. Platt then scored a third time only moments later, making the score 4-2.
Platt said she felt she had good on-ice awareness during the game and felt more motivated since the game was about more than just hockey.
“I think we were focused. Since we were playing for a cause, it gave us more heart. More drive,” Platt said.
Towards the end of the second period, the Warriors were on a streak, with goals from freshman Kailah Solovey and sophomore Anna Sooben. Schwenzfeier described how the team had been working to strengthen its offense.
“Our biggest thing has been working on consistency and having a solid three periods and also consistency on the ice, having the same pressure in the offensive zone as we do in the defensive zone,” Schwenzfeier said.
Schwenzfeier also added that she thought the team played very consistently throughout the three periods.
“I think our team finally started clicking. We got lots of shots off and had a good, solid defensive zone. I think it was one of our best complete games that we’ve had all season,” Schwenzfeier said.
In the third period, Platt scored one last goal, to bring the final score to 7-2.
Gifford said that this win felt crucial and helped them build confidence.
“It broke our two-game losing streak, which is big,” Gifford said. “We were really able to come together as a team for the win.”
