The boys varsity hockey team fought to end their three-game losing streak, but fell to the Framingham Flyers 4-1 on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Walter Brown Arena.
The opening minutes of the game were marked by a back-and-forth exchange of possession between the two sides, but the Flyers scored first by forcing a turnover and finishing a one-on-one against the Warriors’ keeper.
Head coach Mark Marfione framed the trailing as growth rather than a setback.
“I don’t think [the game] slipped away,” Marfione said. “I think we continued to play good all three periods. The goals are going to start coming. We just have to keep working, and I think the goals will come.”
In the second period, Framingham came out strong, controlling the puck and finding holes in the Warriors’ defense. Despite their best defensive effort, the Flyers eventually scored with nine minutes to go.
Senior, captain and forward Owen Lacy raised penalties as a reason the Warriors were unable to gain momentum.
“We tried to battle back, and then we went down shorthanded, which kind of set us back,” Lacy said. “We need to clean up the penalties, and then we’ll be good from there. We played well as a whole.”
In the third period, the Flyers scored just 30 seconds in. Another goal, two minutes later, put the Flyers further ahead. Nevertheless, the Warriors continued to fight to break their goal drought. Finally, with nine minutes remaining, sophomore and defender Ippi Routto scored with a long-range shot.
Routto broke down his play that led to the only goal for the Warriors.
“I made a move on the blue line, and there was the center covering the goalie’s eyes, I just shot it on that,” Routto said.
While the goal for Brookline brought back some momentum for the Warriors, they were unable to pull off a comeback so late in the game. Despite the loss, Marfione praised the Warriors for their hard-fought performance and looks to keep improving.
“We’re getting a little better each game,” Marfione said. “The results aren’t there yet, but they’re gonna come soon. We’re really getting better and growing. “
Lacy said he looks to bounce back with strong performances in the coming weeks, including an upcoming tournament.
“I’m trying to make the playoffs for the first time since I’ve been on the team,” Lacy said. “I’m excited to head into this weekend for our tournament.”
