The girls varsity hockey team lost 3-0 against the Walpole Timberwolves on Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Walter Brown Arena. This loss changed the Warriors’ record to 2-11-0.

The Warriors came into the match with more energy than the Timberwolves but struggled on defense, with the exception of goalie and senior Rozalin Carew-Lyons, who kept the team in the game.

The start of the first period seemed to go in the Warriors favor, with quick attacks and great speed on the ice. They maintained control of the puck for most of the first 15 minutes. By the end of the first period, the Warriors’ energy slowed down, and the Timberwolves quickly scored a goal.

Head coach Nick Sama said he was content with the team’s effort but thought they could improve on their offensive plays.

“The scoreboard didn’t go our way, but I think overall it was a good effort for the team. We’re still struggling on scoring. We need to focus on attacking the net, moving the puck around, communicating and working as a team – all those things that lead to scoring opportunities and we need to be able to finish those [opportunities],” Sama said.

The Warriors struggled to attack during the second period. The Timberwolves’ goalie managed a few blocks, but the Warriors’ shots mainly went wide. The Timberwolves were quick to switch from defense to offense which led to another goal for the Timberwolves.

With players hounding down the puck, the Warriors managed to hold on to the puck for the majority of the game.

Sophomore Isabella Paes, Birdie Hawkins and Sue Jin Koo said they were less than pleased with the attacks.

“Last game, we had a lot more shots on net, so I think we should have taken some more shots this game,” Paes said.

During the third period the Warriors’ defense had trouble stopping attacks. Walpole was physical the whole game, but they became more aggressive in the third period with one slam on sophomore Shayna Blankschtein Chin standing out. The final Walpole goal came a few minutes later.

Sama said he is hopeful about the future and praised the team in their improvement from the beginning of the season.

“We are coming together as a team with more chemistry,” Sama said. “We’re really starting to click in that way.”
